The (E)SQ Sound&Song Contest Gallery

The idea of an ESQ1/SQ80 contest came up on the SQ80 mailing list and immediately caught some interest. This is the page where happy ESQ1/SQ80 users present what they're doing with their machines.

Four categories exist: plain (E)SQ, mainly (E)SQ, (E)SQ in the mix are for songs, the fourth category targets sound patches which you wouldn't expect from an (E)SQ...

The original idea was, that once all categories are more or less equally filled the voting will begin.

If someone is interested in beefing up this page design-wise, let me know. Otherwise it stays as butt-ugly as it is :)

Category 1a: Everything (E)SQ

2005-08-10 Graham Metcalfe Song of Mbira All ESQ-1 with an external reverb. Done in 1985.
2005-08-06 Kirk Slinkard SQ-80 Legend Here is a sequence I did on my SQ-80 when it was fairly new, I was trying out some different patches in a musical context to see what they would sound like. This is a couple of takes on one of the Tangerine Dream melodies from the movie Legend. I recorded it directly then stuck some reverb on it. The musicianship is not quite 100%.

Category 1b: Everything (E)SQ but drums
All sounds must be produced by one or more ESQ1 and/or SQ80. Drums may come from an external source. External effects allowed.

2006-12-18 Jan Nagel ESQuzme Because the Category 1b still isn't populated I decided to compose a song to fill the gap. All sounds come from my ESQ-1 (S/N 362, hence fairly old) and were processed by an Alesis MidiVerb III. Drumloops provided by my Computer. Fascinating, how the ESQ still outperforms even today's cheap synths.

Category 2: Mainly (E)SQ
ESQ1/SQ80 must be main source; additional sound generators and external effects allowed.

2005-08-06 Kirk Slinkard Resistance Is Useless Resistance Is Useless was sequenced on an Ensoniq VFX-SD Version 2 with a SQ-80 slaved by MIDI. Both synths were sent through a mixer directly to the recorder (no external effects) with vocals overdubbed later. The SQ-80 does the Theremin and all analog synth sounds. The VFX does pipe organ, clavinet, "bass", percussion, and ghosts. But I think the SQ-80 still dominates slightly in this arrangement.

Category 3: (E)SQ in the mix

2007-11-14 Scott Willing Not Unwell, Just Uncertain Back in the 80's as ElectroMotive Force (the original "EMF"!), Wade McGregor and I improvised direct to tape using a small collection of MIDI gear hooked together into one uber-instrument: Wade's guitar through an IVL Pitchrider, my ESQ- 1, a Kawai R-100 drum machine, a Roland MT-32, an SPX-90 and an Atari ST. This track was based on a few sequences I'd thrown together on the ESQ1 and features a patch called "Unwell."

2005-09-01 Anthony Fontana No Time SQ80 Bass and string sounds-Conga drums are Roland 505-Acoustic guitar and Mandolin Originally recorded on 4 track cassette machine synced to the SQ80 and Roland 505, badly mixed down to cassette which may have caused some warble in product.
2005-09-01 Anthony Fontana Siren Song SQ80 Bass, Piano & Synthe parts-Drums are Roland 505-Guitar is a Frankenstein Strat I assembled from parts of several victims....same mix stated above.
2005-08-03 Tony Gonzalez ILB Song ESQ is 2 Tracks (Minimoog and Kalimba), wind comes from a sampler, voice samples are added afterwards from a game
2005-08-03 Glenn Javaheri Crossing a Battlefield this is a couple of year old unbelivably sloppy as% riff :) of all first takes (just to remember the riff) linndrum and sq-80 synced on midi, dropped onto electix repeater as four track, lead and rhythm guitar through zoom pro artist tracks added. But maybe it's got a little something to it.
2005-08-06 Kirk Slinkard G.T.R. G.T.R was sequenced on an Ensoniq VFX-SD Version 2 with a SQ-80 slaved by MIDI. Both synths were sent through a mixer directly to the recorder (no external effects) with vocals overdubbed later. The SQ-80 does the Vox organ, a slap bass sound from Technosis, and the "Wicked" lead synth sound from the Hackerpatch column. I stole the rhythm organ style from Ray Manzarek. VFX does metallic sounds, percussion, non-Vox organ, & rhythm guitar. Not really sure which synth comes out ahead in this arrangement.
2005-08-04 Richard Starke The World Tomorrow Today This is the latest track I've done for my Firing Bullets project. The only SQ in it is the solo towards the end of the track, but i loved the sound so much!
2005-08-04 Richard Starke SQ The SQ is giving out the arrrrhhhsss and what I call the blakes 7 pad (if anyone remembers that)! The Wavestation is doing the naff bells. The rest is a Polysix soft synth on bass and Live providing the drums. All put together in Sonar.
